What’s a Lutheran?
Glad you asked! Lutherans come in all shapes and sizes, from every continent on the planet, and every age group, gender, and race! We are followers of Jesus who believe God continues to embrace all of humanity in grace through the Holy Spirit. We believe that God communicates that grace to individuals and in community as we gather to hear the Bible and receive the sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism. And we believe the community grows deeper as we respect and serve one another and all people in need.
St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church is a multi-cultural church which values God’s welcome, and as a result, guests experience a sincere and warm welcome into the life of this community. Having sponsored Liberian immigrants after the civil wars from 1989 into the early 2000’s, the congregation has experienced the blessing of becoming more global in our understandings and concerns.
Looking for a community where you can worship God and where people of all ages, genders, and races are valued? Come and check St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church out! SMTLC can be found at 690 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, RI 02861. Worship begins at 9:30 AM!
About the Church
St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church, each formed in the late 19th century to bring a Lutheran presence to Pawtucket, merged together officially in May of 1974. St. Matthew Trinity blossomed in their new setting on Newport Avenue! Since 1974, the daycare and food pantry ministry have developed in direct response to our Mission Statement:
We, God’s people of St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church in Pawtucket, RI, responding to the call of the Gospel, will serve, help and address the spiritual human needs within our local, regional, and global communities. We will accomplish this by strengthening our outward focus in mission while maintaining a strong community of faith
The leadership of SMTLC begins with the church council. The council includes representatives from every board/committee, two “at large” church members, secretary, treasurer, and president of the congregation. They meet the third Tuesday of most months in the year.
- The Deacon Board oversees worship and supports the pastor in many ways, serving as a link to the pastor from the church
- The Property Board oversees all things concerning our grounds and facilities
- The Outreach Board oversees our Food Pantry, the shared Soup Kitchen ministry, and helps the church to serve missions outside of our church walls, through our giving financially and with our time and talent
- The Education Board supports our Sunday School and Youth Ministries, as well as periodic midweek learning opportunities for adults
- The Fellowship Board makes sure we have fun and enjoy coffee hour after worship
The Pastor of St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church is The Rev. Cheryl Larsen Lawing. Ordained 30 years, Pastor Cheryl has served SMTLC since 2005.
